ElevenLabs review
The most natural AI voice and cloning on the market — and you pay for it.
Buy it for the best-sounding voice and cloning quality; look elsewhere if you are cost-sensitive or generating at high volume.
Best for: Creators, developers, and businesses that need the most natural-sounding AI voice or high-fidelity voice cloning and can absorb premium per-credit and per-minute pricing at moderate volume. · From: Free: 10,000 credits/mo (~10 min of audio), no commercial rights, "elevenlabs.io" attribution required. Paid from $6/mo (Starter, 30k credits + commercial license + instant cloning); Creator $22 (121k, professional cloning; first month 50% off), Pro $99 (600k), Scale $299 (1.8M), Business $990 (6M). Voice agents billed separately at ~$0.08-$0.12/min, with LLM and telephony on top.
Pros
- + Most natural, human-like TTS available (v3 model), with emotional audio tags and 70+ languages
- + Strong voice cloning: instant from ~1 minute of audio, plus professional cloning on Creator and up
- + Ultra-low-latency Flash/Turbo models (~75ms) genuinely usable for real-time phone agents
- + Broad platform in one place: TTS, speech-to-text, dubbing, sound effects, voice agents, solid API
- + Real free tier to test the quality before paying anything
Cons
- − Expensive at scale: credits deplete fast, and per-minute agent costs plus telephony and LLM add up quickly
- − Free tier has no commercial rights (attribution required) - not usable for real business output
- − Highest-quality v3 model is too slow for live calls, so agents run on a lower-tier voice (Flash v2.5)
- − Priority support is reserved for enterprise; entry plans get limited help
Setup
Signup is fast — email or Google, and you are generating audio in under a minute on the free tier, no card required. The dashboard exposes text-to-speech, the voice library, cloning, dubbing, sound effects, and the Agents builder without much hunting. Instant voice cloning needs only about a minute of clean audio; professional cloning (Creator and up) takes longer to train but sounds markedly better. For most people the path from "curious" to "first usable clip" is genuinely short.
The AI / voice quality
This is the reason to pay for ElevenLabs. The v3 model is the most natural and expressive TTS on the market, with audio tags ([laughs], [whispers], [sighs]) for emotional control and support for 70+ languages. The catch is real: v3 has higher, more variable latency and is explicitly not recommended for real-time use. For live phone agents you drop to Flash v2.5 (~75ms), which is fast and good but a step below v3's expressiveness. Cloning fidelity is class-leading — the main reason competitors get compared to ElevenLabs rather than the other way around.
Pricing
Free gives 10,000 credits/month (~10 minutes) with no commercial rights and a mandatory "elevenlabs.io" attribution, so it is a trial, not a production tier. Paid starts at $6/mo (Starter, 30k credits, commercial license, instant cloning). Creator is $22/mo (121k credits, professional cloning; first month is 50% off), Pro $99 (600k), Scale $299 (1.8M), Business $990 (6M). Voice agents bill separately at roughly $0.08–$0.12/min for the voice, with the LLM and telephony charged on top at cost. Credits deplete faster than the headline numbers suggest — a real workload burns through a tier quickly, which is where the bill surprises people.
Free / cheaper alternatives
- Cartesia (Sonic) — comparable low-latency real-time voice, frequently cheaper per minute for always-on agent workloads.
- PlayHT or Murf — cheaper for bulk narration and voiceover when you do not need top-tier cloning.
- Kokoro or Piper (open-source, self-hosted) — effectively free if you can run the model yourself; quality sits below v3 but is fine for many uses, with zero per-minute cost.
Verdict
Buy ElevenLabs when voice quality and cloning are the product and your volume is moderate. If you are generating at high volume or running always-on agents, model the per-minute and credit math before committing — the quality premium is real, but so is the bill, and a cheaper engine covers a lot of use cases at a fraction of the cost.
