ManyChat is one of the fastest bots to get live. Connect your Instagram or Facebook page, drop a keyword trigger or comment-to-DM rule onto the visual canvas, and you can be capturing leads the same afternoon. The template library and a large, active community mean you rarely start from a blank canvas, and official Meta partner status keeps the API connection stable. It earns its reputation as the default for Instagram automation.
The AI / automation
Manage your expectations here. ManyChat's real strength is deterministic flows: keyword triggers, comment-to-DM, story-reply automations, buttons and branches. The "AI Step" drops a single AI-generated response inside a flow, and the fuller AI capability is effectively a paid add-on at roughly +$29/mo on top of Pro or Business. It answers one question, then hands control back to the scripted flow, intent/keyword-level Q&A rather than a free-form agent that holds context across a conversation. Treat it as smart flows with an AI sprinkle, not a conversational assistant.
Pricing
ManyChat overhauled its pricing on 2 March 2026, moving to active-contact-based billing and cutting the free plan from 1,000 contacts to just 25, essentially a trial. Paid tiers start at Essential $14/mo (250 contacts, Instagram + Messenger), Pro $29/mo (2,500 contacts, unlocks a third channel such as WhatsApp or SMS), Business $69/mo (7,500 contacts, unlimited channels), with an Advanced tier around $139/mo. Note the draft-era "$17 Essential / $39 Pro" figures are too high, the current entry prices are $14 and $29. Two catches: cost scales with active contacts, so it is hard to predict, and WhatsApp/SMS carry separate per-conversation fees from Meta and carriers on top of your subscription.
Free / cheaper alternatives
The 25-contact free plan is fine for testing, not for running a business. If you only need Instagram comment-to-DM, cheaper single-purpose tools cover that job for a fraction of Pro. Chatfuel is the closest like-for-like Meta-focused rival; SendPulse offers a more generous genuinely-usable free tier across chat channels; Tidio leans toward website live chat and support. If your volume is small, one of these often beats paying Pro-plus-AI-add-on money.
Verdict
ManyChat is still the best tool on the market for Instagram DM and comment-to-DM funnels, and the builder plus community make it fast to ship. But the March 2026 restructure turned the free tier into a trial and put the more capable "AI" behind a paid add-on that is keyword-level anyway. You are paying premium money for excellent flow automation, not a real AI agent, so buy it for the Instagram funnels, not the AI.
